The Freedom Forum Institute’s Power Shift Project marks the publication of the new book, “There’s No Crying in Newsrooms: What Women Have Learned about What It Takes to Lead,” with a conversation featuring current and past leaders in the media industry.

The book, written by Kristin Grady Gilger and Julia Wallace, tells stories of remarkable women who broke barriers at media organizations around the country over the last four decades.

“There’s No Crying in Newsrooms” features interviews with nearly 100 female pioneers who share their lessons about what it takes to succeed in media or any other male-dominated organization.

The panel includes:

• Co-author Kristin Grady Gilger, senior associate dean at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, who spent 20 years in various reporting and editing roles at newspapers across the country;
• Co-author Julia Wallace, Frank Russell chair at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University and the first woman editor-in-chief of TheAtlanta Journal-Constitution;
• Judy Woodruff, anchor and managing editor of “PBS NewsHour;”
• Wanda Lloyd, chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Savannah State University, former executive editor of the Montgomery Advertiser and author of the upcoming memoir “Coming Full Circle: From Jim Crow to Journalism Giant.”

The Power Shift Project is a national industry-wide initiative to improve the quality and future of journalism by improving the diversity, equity and culture of news organizations. The project’s goal is workplace integrity, defined as environments free of harassment, discrimination and incivility and filled with opportunity, especially for those who have traditionally been denied it.
