A number of the nation’s top sports writers, columnists and editors will gather at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Newseum’s Knight Studio, to discuss what makes great sports journalism, and who are the great sports journalists of past and present. Panel members will include: Tom Boswell, columnist for The Washington Post; David Kindred, contributing writer for Sports on Earth; Jane Leavy, sports writer and author; Kevin Merida, senior vice president and editor-in-chief of The Undefeated; John Schulian, former columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, screenwriter, and editor of “The Great American Sports Page A Century of Classic Columns;” and Ava Wallace, college sports writer for The Washington Post. The discussion will be moderated by George Solomon, Director of the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism, of the University of Maryland; and Gene Policinski, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Freedom Forum Institute. Solomon is former deputy managing editor for sports at the Washington Post. Policinski is former Managing Editor/Sports for USA TODAY. The program is the latest in a series of annual discussions about sports journalism co-presented by the Povich Center and by the Freedom Forum Institute. p>
